Quick start¶
This tour takes about ten minutes and touches every system. Keys are listed in Controls.
1. Open the demo level¶
Open /GASPALS/Levels/DefaultLevel and press Play (Alt+P). For a bigger view, use Play > New Editor Window.
You start as the CMC pawn (SandboxCharacter_CMC), shown as the UEFN mannequin. The level is a grey-box sandbox: blocks of many heights, walls for cover, teleporters, a target dummy and an input wall that lists the controls.
2. Move around¶
- Walk, run (default) and sprint (hold Shift). Stop suddenly, turn around, run in circles: motion matching picks starts, stops, pivots and turns from a large animation set.
- Toggle walking with Ctrl, crouch with C, strafe with the middle mouse button.
- Press N to switch to the Mover pawn (
SandboxCharacter_Mover). It uses the newer Mover movement with Network Prediction. Sprint, then press C: the Mover pawn slides.
3. Traverse¶
Run at a low block and press Space: the character vaults, hurdles or mantles depending on the block's height and depth. Blocks of the traversable kind (LevelBlock_Traversable) are spread across the level. Try them walking, running and sprinting; the animation adapts.
4. Take cover¶
- Walk into a wall: the character takes cover and moves along it. Low walls make it crouch.
- Point the crosshair at a wall and tap Q: a marker shows on the wall and the character snaps to it (sticky cover). Hold Q while aiming at a wall farther away: the character runs there.
- In sticky cover, hold the move key toward the end of the wall: the character stops at the edge, and walks around an outside corner.
- Hold Right Button in cover: the character aims from cover, stepping out or standing up only as far as needed to see the target. Release it to go back.
- Press Space behind low cover to vault over it.
5. Equip items¶
Hold T. The game slows down and a menu opens. Scroll to Rifle and release. The character holds the rifle with the matching overlay pose on top of all locomotion. Hold Right Button to aim: the arms follow the camera pitch.
Try the other items: pistol, bow (aim to draw), torch, binoculars, box and barrel. Unequip returns to the default pose.
6. Change overlays¶
Hold V for the overlay pose menu (Default, Injured, HandsTied) and B for the overlay body menu (Default, Masculine, Feminine). These change how the body is held, on top of locomotion and items.
7. Cameras¶
- Press 1 to cycle the perspective: third person, top-down, side-scroller, first person.
- Press 2 to cycle the camera style (close, medium, far, debug view in third person).
- Press Alt to switch the shoulder.
In first person, look down: you see your own body. Equip the rifle and aim: the sights line up with the eye.
8. Characters¶
Press M to cycle the visible character: the MetaHuman Kellan, Manny, Quinn, and back to the UEFN mannequin. Everything still works, including first person and equipment: the characters retarget the mannequin's animation at runtime.
9. Ragdoll¶
- On the CMC pawn, press X to ragdoll and again to recover.
- Open
/GASPALS/Levels/RagdollLevelfor the full ragdoll demo with the Mover ragdoll pawn: R ragdolls (Space to get up), Left Button near another character does a takedown, E shoves. Hold aim and click to shoot characters, or hold aim and press E to spawn one.
10. More levels¶
| Level | Shows |
|---|---|
NPCLevel | AI characters (both pawns) that walk around and use benches through smart objects and StateTrees. Press E near a bench to sit down yourself. |
RagdollLevel | Ragdoll, physical animation, takedowns and shoves, physics obstacles. |
LookAtPOI_Level | An isolated look-at example: characters that look at points of interest you click. |
Try multiplayer¶
In the Play options (the three dots next to Play), set Number of Players to 2 and Net Mode to Play As Listen Server. Every system is replicated: equip items, take cover and switch perspectives on the client and watch the other window.
Debug views¶
The Game Animation Widget button in DefaultLevel opens an editor panel to change the locomotion setup, camera style, physics profile and debug drawing. The same switches are console variables, listed in Console variables.
